Didier PLASSARD was born in 1958. He completed a PhD in Drama Studies at the University Paris III – Sorbonne nouvelle in 1989. He was assistant professor in Comparative Literature at the Université Rennes 2 (1990-1996), where he founded the Department of Performing Arts, then full professor in Comparative Literature and Drama Studies at the same university (1996-2009). Since 2009, he is full professor in Drama and Performance Studies at the Université Paul Valéry - Montpellier III. With Mathilde Monnier, then director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Montpellier – Languedoc Roussillon (1998-2015), he created the Master Degree Exerce in 2011 and became its co-manager, together with Christian Rizzo.

His research focuses on contemporary drama and contemporary stage direction, avant-garde theatre, puppet theatre, relations between theatre and images. His doctoral dissertation received the Georges-Jamati Award for Theatre Aesthetics (1990). Other distinctions include the Jean Cléo-Godin Award (Canada, 2006) and the Sirena d’oro of the Festival Arrivano dal mare ! (Italy, 2012). He was made in 2015 Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

He has also been an artistic consultant for the Théâtre National de Bretagne (Rennes, 2003-2012), a researcher for the Prospero European Theatre Network (2008-2012), and the chief editor of the web-journal Prospero European Review – Research and Theatre (2010-2013), as well as of the N. 20 of Puck – La marionette et les autres arts (2014, with Cristina Grazioli), and of the N. 38 of Art Press 2: La marionnette sur toutes les scènes (August 2015, with Carole Guidicelli). He works as a dramaturgy consultant for the theatre company Arketal.
