Biography

Artistic Approach: Leonardo Montecchia considers that dance is the tool of thought. His work can be seen as photography, as a frozen image of moving experience.

Choreographers like to explore pastures new. Leonardo’s dual experience as dancer and actor means he often mixes text, acting and dance in his creative work. Humour is one of his favourite ways to deal with serious subjects.

Career : Following training and work as actor and dancer at Buenos Aires - Argentina, Leonardo Montecchia moved to France in 1998 on a scholarship from the Antorchas Foundation and the French Embassy in Argentina. Thanks to the support, he graduated with a degree in Performing Arts and dance major from Paris 8 University. In 2001, he continued training with Mathilde Monnier, at the Professional Training section of the Choreography Centre of Montpellier. At the same time, he worked with several companies in London, Zurich and Turin. His career as choreographer began with two works: La Cravate (2001) and duO2 (2002).

In 2004, he created the Compagnie de la Mentira and composed several pieces blending dance and text: Le MenSonge (2003), Potosi, la montagne d’argent (2005), Intimidité (2006), Patetico (2006), French Kiss (2007), Tout va bien et Entrelacés (2008), Le Nombril (2010), Tango Paradoxe (2011), Tout Terrain (2014), and In-Utile (2016).

In 2005, he created the "Hors Lits" concept in Montpellier, giving performances in private homes and creating a unique setting for close-contact experimentation and audience experience. Today, "Hors Lits" has spread to 35 towns, both in France and abroad.

In 2008, he followed the “Transforme” programme, run by Myriam Gourfynk at the Royaumont Foundation; this gave Leonardo the opportunity to begin researching the notion of choreographic writing.

Alongside his career as dancer and choreographer, Leonardo Montecchia also teaches choreographic composition and Tango-contact, via workshops organized in Europe and Latin America. He runs dance workshops for groups of amateurs – senior citizens, people with disabilities, teenagers, students or schoolchildren – seeking to enhance the potential of each individual and guiding participants through the experience of movement, towards the discovery and sensation that another body is possible.

In 2015/16, he became artist in residence at Montpellier University, where he created the choreographic journey “In-Utile”.

He is currently working as choreographer, stage director and teacher for the Compagnie de la Mentira, and as choreographer, artist and teacher for several companies and institutions, both in France and abroad.
