Fundamental principles transmission, exploring gaze
In all types of Indian physical practice, the body is structured and ranked to give meaning. This is particularly visible in the performing arts, where all means of expression, dance, performance, music, poetry, makeup and costume develop “rasa”, an atmosphere to be shared between artist and audience. Participants deepen their knowledge of corporal techniques after being initiated in Mohini Attam’s style.
The initiation is a vector to experiment lasya (feminine). Participants embark on a voyage of discovery of the main principles of traditional techniques: roots, rhythmic structure, facial movement and expressiveness and sense of ritual and symbols. After a preparatory session (inspired by yoga and martial arts), participants will work on practical technique: greetings, rhythmic stomping, specific body movements, composed steps, hand (mudras), ocular and facial (abhinaya) language.
The workshop offers participants sensorial exploration, with interaction between individuals and groups. Through specific tuition on traditional Indian dance, the workshop explores the contribution of this dance style to contemporary creation. Participants explore transmission from a cross-cultural, interdisciplinary perspective.
