— The 10th anniversary of the Exerce Master course

Initiated in 2011, in partnership with Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 University, the Exerce Master is an internationally recognised training course for artist project-leaders (choreographers, performers) and dance research.

In 2021, we are celebrating the tenth anniversary of this Master and, for the occasion, are launching an editorial collection of former student dissertations. In the autumn, three dissertations will be edited for the collection launch which will be added to by the annual publication of a new dissertation.

The accessibility of dissertations - writings of artists - opens up another form of public sharing of choreographic approaches, in addition to their dissemination on stages and in theatres.

Since the start of the 2016 academic year, two groups of artist-researcher students, one in the first year and the other in the second year, have been working simultaneously at ICI — CCN. In October 2021, a new group of eight students will spend a year with the first group of students.

Exploring ways of working as a dancer, choreographer, researcher, citizen, is at the heart of the Exerce Master: an invitation to both broaden the fields of choreography and pursue alignment between artistic processes and research methodologies.

Extending from the two-year Master, a post-Exerce residency programme is available after graduation. This programme takes the Master towards a professional environment demonstrating how the experimentation generated through the Master can be brought to life and shaped by dialogue with places where representations take place. After La Vignette, a publicly-funded theatre at Paul-Valéry University in Montpellier, La Bellone Theatre in Brussels, Essieu du Batut in Aveyron in 2020-2021, the seven outgoing students will be welcomed by Le Pacifique | CDCN Grenoble - Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes, Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers, la Briqueterie - CDCN du Val de Marne and Parallèle in Marseille (partnerships in progress).

In 2021-2022, the programme is organised around two work tracks:

A programme to support and stimulate research-oriented work

Research-oriented work unfolds through experimentation. This continually brings into play and broadens use of methodological tools for enriching personal research. Particular attention is paid to how methodologies resulting from choreographic practices, and those resulting from university research, mutually impact one another.

Research-oriented work requires a state of availability to accommodate the diversity of questions and experiences of the Exerce group, seen as a resource.

Research-oriented work concerns all media or formats via which it meets an audience (plays, stage performance, writing, conferences, transmission, etc.).

This prepares the ground for reflection as to how each artist-researcher student records and deploys their research themes over two years.

— A training programme "hosted" by the ICI-CCN project and linked to a wide diversity of artistic, social and political contexts.

The training programme is part of Christian Rizzo’s ICI — National Choreographic Centre Montpellier Occitanie project. Daily presence within the CCN gives students proximity with the current state, form, address and questioning of choreographic creation. Beyond this local context, many regional-level projects, but also throughout France and internationally, allow each artist-researcher student to work on their project by exchanges between dance studios and other structures.

In this perspective, the 2021-2022 educational programme includes two weeks of in-situ practice, first in Montpellier, led by choreographer Laurent Pichaud, then in Lozère, where Exerce students and students from Esban in Nîmes, work together. Finally, some phases in the programme will be dedicated to choreography’s documentary dimension, or how contemporary choreographic work incorporates testimonies and documents into performance, recounting extra-choreographic situations.
